Pistol Shrimp And Goby Symbiosis
Home November 29th. 2009, 6:55amPistol shrimp from the genus Alpheus display a remarkable behavior in the wild. They are known to have a symbiotic relationship with some types of gobies.
Both parties benefit from the partnership. The roles in life are as follows. The pistol shrimp creates a home where they both live in, namely the intricate complex of tunnels in the sand bed.
In return, the goby are the eyes and the ears of the territory. Since Pistol Shrimp have pretty bad eyesight, the goby can alert it to any incoming danger.
They are never far from each other or from their burrow for that matter. The pistol shrimp maintains contact with the goby by resting its antennae on the fish. Any sudden movements from the goby are detected by the shrimp and normally a sign that danger approaches.
