I wanted a window treatment in the master bedroom that could be room darkening, or let in some light and air. Wooden house shutters turned out to be the perfect thing. when they are all the way closed ,our room is dark. If we want light during the day, the veins open to whatever degree we want by turning a wand. The shutter stays down, in place, so we still have our privacy. We have the choice of opening the shutters to allow for window cleaning or opening of windows for fresh air. We got ours in a nice natural cherry finish to match our wood work.
