A recent study conducted by Singapore’s National University Hospital have shed new light on sleep apnea and heart attack. While patients often think it is an isolated condition, studies have shown that heart disease patients with Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) are more likely to have a recurrence of their heart disease even after ballooning procedures. OSA patients unknowingly stop breathing repeatedly while asleep. OSA affects 13.6 per cent and 4.3 per cent of men and women in Singapore respectively. This is significantly higher than the average Asian prevalence of symptomatic OSA for middle-aged men (4.1 to 7.5 per cent) and women (2.1 to 3.2 per cent).
