Definitions of infant constipation
Health July 10th. 2009, 3:12amConstipation is commonplace as a cause of abdominal pain in infants. A child not passing faeces as frequently as once every 3 days is considered constipated. A child who has hard stools and is experiencing difficulty and/or discomfort in opening their bowels may also be considered as suffering from infant constipation. Constipation can occur in the newborn, infant, toddler, or indeed a child of any age. Babies who are breast feeding will usually open their bowel with each breast feeding, and can open their bowels up to 6 times a day. Bottle fed babies on the other hand can have a bowel movement only once a day or even once every two or three days.
If your baby appears to be constipated, contact your medical practitioner for advice. If the child is older than one year and seems to be constipated, then you may wish to try some simple dietary changes such as adding some fibre to their diet and offering water.
